Rationale
This is a resource for teacher and students who would like to learn about the Indonesian ‘Wayang Kulit’ Shadow puppets in the classroom. This resource guide is for teachers of the visual arts but can be adapted for language and drama. The resources in this site are designed suitable for students in band 7-8 but can be adapted for bands 5-6 and 9-10.
In this resource I have selected images, videos, activities and games that are sourced and created by acknowledged and respected galleries, museums and libraries that specialized in Asian art, culture and education. My choice to use resources from respectable and acknowledged sites that specialises in Asian art and culture guarantees that the content will be informative and educational in quality, ensuring that Asian art and culture is respected and appreciated, rather than exploited.
This resource provides teachers with ideas on how to use the multimedia based education resources in the classroom. It suggests discussions questions to promote reflection and provide feedback about understanding. This is a valuable resource for the arts band 7-8, particularly for the responding strand of the Visual arts. Students will consider the art work in a boarder context and how it is portrayed in a wide range of different context such as social, cultural, historical and the role of the artist and the audience.
Students will develop personal and social as well as literacy capabilities, as students work effectively in teams and handling challenging situations constructively to produce and perform their own original shadow theater.
Sociocultural theorist proposes that cognitive benefits arise when group members elaborate on and provide feedback for one another’s ideas. This allows students to build a joint understanding that is far greater than they could have produced individually. Here the teacher will act as a facilitator by providing students with a framework to structure their learning allowing students to use ‘discovery learning’. This will allow students a sense of autonomy and to work collaboratively in their groups, which encourages social interaction with their peers and learn from each other.
This resource will allow students to develop a better understanding and knowledge of everyday Asian culture and society. This will benefit the student’s understanding and acceptance of Australia’s multicultural community.
The multidisciplinary nature of shadow theater makes it a perfect tool for integrative learning such as drama, language, social studies, science and visual arts
